Eye Patch

The Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians and Egyptians – pretty much all of the ancient Mediterranean peoples – would decorate the prows of their ships with eyes to both protect and intimidate. Greek hoplites also took to using eyes on their shields. Since the First World War armoured units in the UK have used them, too. (Apparently a Chinese business man who payed for a landship in full insisted the tank have eyes, ‘hence’ they’re known as ‘Chinese eyes’ in the British Army.)
